Karnataka’s Malnad Gidda Cow Gains Renewed Attention

Malnad Gidda Cow: The Malnad Gidda cow, native to the Malnad hill region of Karnataka, has earned a distinct place among India’s indigenous cattle breeds. This breed is primarily found in the districts of Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, and Udupi, which fall within the Western Ghats region. The Malnad Gidda cow has the remarkable ability to withstand adverse climatic conditions such as heavy rainfall, dense forests, and high-altitude terrain. With its small body frame and exceptionally strong immunity, it is considered a hardy and resilient breed.

The Malnad Gidda cow stands at an average height of about three feet and weighs between 80 and 120 kilograms. These cows are generally black in color, though some may have brownish shades. Their small horns and strong legs are distinctive features that aid them in navigating hilly and forested landscapes.

On average, the Malnad Gidda cow yields 1.5 to 3 liters of milk per day. Although the quantity is modest, the milk is known to contain A2 protein, which is considered to have high nutritional and health value. Experts note that this milk helps improve digestion and strengthens the immune system.

The dung and urine of Malnad Gidda cows play a significant role in organic and natural farming. They are widely used in the preparation of natural inputs such as Jeevamrutham and Beejamrutham, making this breed invaluable for sustainable agriculture. These cows require minimal feed, thereby reducing the financial burden on farmers.

Compared to crossbred cattle, Malnad Gidda cows are less prone to diseases, and veterinary expenses are considerably lower. As a result, small scale farmers and organic cultivators are increasingly showing interest in rearing this breed.

However, due to modern agricultural practices and the growing influence of crossbreeding, the population of Malnad Gidda cows has been gradually declining. In response, farmer groups and voluntary organizations in several parts of Karnataka have stepped forward to conserve and promote this indigenous breed.

With low investment and low maintenance, along with the ability to provide health-rich products, the Malnad Gidda cow holds immense potential. It is poised to play an even more crucial role in strengthening the rural economy and organic farming systems in the years to come.
